C&P Exam Coaching

What is a C&P Exam?

When a veteran files a disability claim, the VA will usually schedule a Compensation & Pension (C&P) exam. This is a medical evaluation used by the VA to better understand the condition being claimed.

Sometimes the exam is done by a VA doctor. Other times, it’s conducted by a private medical professional. Either way, the purpose is the same: the doctor evaluates whether the condition exists and gives a medical opinion on whether it was caused by, or made worse by, military service.

That medical opinion is then sent to the VA reviewer, making the decision on the claim. It often plays a major role in whether the claim is approved and what disability rating is assigned. If the condition is already service-connected, the exam can also influence whether the VA decides to increase, decrease, or maintain the current rating.

How long is the exam?

The length of a C&P exam can vary depending on the condition being evaluated. Some exams are fairly quick, while others take more time. For example, evaluations for mental health conditions can often last one to three hours.

During the exam, the doctor may ask detailed questions about your condition, observe your behavior, and conduct a physical evaluation if needed. In some cases, the examiner may focus mainly on reviewing your medical records and discussing your history with you. The goal is to gather the information needed to provide the VA with a clear medical opinion about your condition and how it relates to your military service.

What impact does a C&P exam have?

The C&P exam is one of the most important steps in the VA disability claims process, but it isn’t the final word on your claim.

The exam itself is not an approval or a denial. It’s simply one piece of evidence the VA reviewer considers when evaluating your case. The medical professional conducting the exam provides an opinion, but they do not make the final decision on whether your claim is approved.

In some cases, even a favorable C&P exam doesn’t guarantee approval. The VA looks at the entire record before making a decision. That’s why your claim needs to be supported by strong documentation and a clear connection to your military service.

C&P Exam Coaching

Another doctor’s appointment may not be something to look forward to, but the C&P exam is an important step in the VA disability claims process. It can feel time-consuming and frustrating, and it’s normal to feel some anxiety going into it.

The good news, our Veteran Coach can help you feel confident and prepared. They will walk you through what to expect and how to approach the exam so you feel ready when the day comes.

After the exam, your Coach will check in with you. And if something didn’t feel right, which can happen from time to time, they’ll explain the options available, including requesting a copy of the exam results or asking the VA to schedule a new C&P exam.
