What is a C&P Exam?

When a veteran files a disability claim with the VA, he or she will be scheduled for a compensation and pension (C&P) exam.  A C&P exam is a specialized medical examination conducted by the VA to assess a veteran's disability claim.  Sometimes this medical examination is conducted by a VA doctor, and sometimes it is contracted out to a private medical professional.  Whether the C&P exam is conducted by the VA or a private medical professional, the exam itself will be the same.  The doctor will conduct an assessment to form an opinion as to whether or not the veteran's medical condition he or she is claiming exists and if it was either caused by or made worse by the veteran's active duty military service.  This doctor's opinion will then be sent to the VA rater who will lean heavily on it to determine not only if the disability claim is approved, but what level of disability the claim is approved for as well.  If the veteran is already service connected for this condition, the VA rater will lean heavily on this opinion to determine if an increase or decrease is warranted.

C&P Exam

The length of time that a C&P exam lasts will vary greatly depending on what medical condition you are claiming.  For example, a common evaluation for mental health conditions can often last between one to three hours.  During your C&P exam, you will be asked questions, have your behavior observed, and have a physical examination performed, or the doctor may just review your file with you.

C&P Exam

The C&P exam is one of the most important steps in the VA disability claims process, but it's not the end all be all when it comes to your entire claim.  The C&P exam is not itself an approval or denial of your VA claim.  It is simply one piece of evidence the VA rater will look at.  The medical professional conducting the exam does not make the final decision on whether or not your claim is approved.  In rare instances, it is even possible to get a favorable C&P exam and still get your claim denied.

C&P Exam Coaching

While the thought of another doctor's appointment can be disheartening, it is important to remember that the C&P exam is a very important part of your disability claims process.  It can be a time consuming and frustrating process, and it is normal to feel a lot of anxiety about the C&P exam.  Fortunately, there are some things that you can do and be aware of to help make the process smooth and successful.  Your Veteran Coach will guide you through the entire C&P exam experience to make sure you are fully prepared.  After your C&P exam has been conducted, your Veteran Coach will follow up with you to make sure everything went smoothly.  If you believe you had a bad C&P exam, which does happen from time to time, your Coach will explain your options, such as requesting your C&P exam results and requesting a new C&P exam.
